Jan 22, 2013
The Character Education Partnership has named Fort Bend ISD a 2012 Promising Practice in Character Education National Award Winner. The District was recognized for its High School Diversity Conference at the 19th National Forum, held November 3 in Washington, D.C.
The High School Diversity Conference is an intra-district event that provides students with an opportunity to discover ideas, recognize the importance of shared leadership and develop an energized approach for promoting diversity. The objective is to provide a forum for student-led discussion of diversity issues to increase awareness, improve communication and develop mutual understanding among student groups.
Each year, students who form the District Student Advisory Committee meet monthly to plan the conference. They select a theme to be the central focus for classroom activities and school events leading up to the conference, and work with District staff, community sponsors, school partners and volunteers to organize and facilitate the event.
A total of 500 students from all 11 FBISD high schools, representing all grade levels, participate in the event. The conference includes a motivational keynote speaker, three group break-out sessions, and a closing ceremony message. Each high school group develops a campus action plan to address diversity issues and promote positive character among students.
